O programu

Projekt avstrijske sekcije ASIFA
Izbor in organizacija: Thomas Renoldner

Program predstavlja uvod v načrtovano serijo predstavitev animiranih filmov v avstrijskih kinih.

1. Netoleranca, ksenofobija

GRABOWSKI, House of the Life

PLEASURES OF WAR

3. Seksualnost

RING OF FIRE

Mimi reče: "Poglej kaj imam tu, mogoče", dvigne krilo in pokaže svojo vagino. Max odvrne: "Je prava?"

About the programme

A project of ASIFA Austria
Selection and organisation: Thomas Renoldner

The program forms the prelude to a planned series of animation film presentations in Austrian cinemas. The program was shown with great success in Vienna, then toured to four other Austrian cities and will - after the excursion to the international animation film festival in Ljubljana - be shown in almost all other Austrian regions. It is foreseen to expand the tour to Germany and Switzerland, and depending on subtitled copies, to other countries in Europe.

With this programme I wanted to pay tribute to a selection of outstanding film artists. It is a sort of retrospective; almost all of the artists shown in the program (except for Andreas Hykade) have been working for many years, and (this is true also for Hykade) have been "swimming against the tide" in the waters of the largely conservative international animation film festivals for several years. Their films have been shown at numerous animation festivals around the world, however, when it comes to the main prizes these films (again with the exception of Andreas Hykade) were usually too unconventional, too provocative, too radical …It is common to all films that they cover taboo topics, and that they are rather liberal in the representation of sexual content. Also, all filmmakers found their individual, strong, and expressive way to use the medium of animated film. This program is also a selection of filmmakers, whom I personally like very much, partly I would call them 'my friends'.

Thomas Renoldner

About the films:

The program in an assembly of an exclusive selection of internationally successful "enfants terribles", who occupy radical positions, in technical regard as well as in regards of content, who break conventions, touch taboo topics, but can be also very entertaining. The six films are joined in pairs, each of these pairs focuses on a certain theme with one film made by a man and the other by a woman. These three thematic blocks are "intolerance, xenophobia", "war" and "sexuality", however, the liberal representation of sexual content can be found in all of the selected films.

1. Intolerance, Xenophobia

GRABOWSKI, House of the Life

Mariola Brillowska tells the story of a sex addicted gravedigger and Polish emigrant on a German cemetery. This 20-minutes long film debut by Mariola Brillowska, quite disputed for the pornographic and violent sequences, received the Grand Prix at the famous short film festival in Oberhausen 1991.

INTOLERANCE

Phil Mulloy packs the ruling global xenophobia in an amusing metaphor: Human beings find a film document about the "Zogs", a population far away from the Earth, and, because these beings are so different, they immediately feel the need to fly to that planet in order to wipe out this strange population.

2. War

MERE UBU

The film is a follow-up project to 'Pere Ubu', Sabl's interpretation of Alfred Jarry. Heinrich Sabl, who has been trained in puppet animation in East Europe, has found his own very unique and up-to-date style, quite different from the historical model. In Berlin the film has cult status, also because the voices of the puppets come from 'underground' stars like Blixa Bargeld, Sophie Rois and Ben Becker.

PLEASURES OF WAR

The theme of Ruth Lingford's film is the relation between war and sexuality. Ruth tells the story of 'Judith and Holofernes', where Judith beheads the tyrant in the loveplay. The reduced graphic level is combined with real pictures: archive photos of scenes from the war and concentration camps.

3. Sexuality

RING OF FIRE

An internationally repeatedly award-winning animated film in Cinemascope format by Andreas Hykade. Two Cowboys spend their days in the shadow of a rock, the nights they spend in a dream-land of their sexual desires. There they meet dangerous and enchanting creatures, and finally lose themselves.

LES MISERABLES

The program is closed by the appearance of the funny cartoon figures Mimi and Max in the film by Mara Mattuschka. They are somehow childlike bisexual. Mimi says: "look, what I have here, perhaps" when she lifts her skirt to show her vagina. Max replies: "Is this real ...?"
