KLEIT / THE DRESS
Jelena Girlin, Mari-Liis Bassovskaja (Nukufilm Oü)
Estonia, 2007, 35mm, 6’30’’
A woman tries to remember the highlights of her life, or maybe dreams about them. Who is that woman, whose dress knows of a beautiful exciting life with kitchen utensils? We never see the woman herself, though we move along her body, or rather along her dress, since the dress and the body can be the same.
Jury Statement
THE DRESS impresses through the richness of its artistic elements which evoke a humain body full of remembrances and imprints. The directors understand that animation can also be poetry. By the act of altering objects and material pertaining to everyday life, they create metaphorical meanings which are intimately related to the nature of femininity.
ELETVONAL / LIFE LINE
Tomek Ducki (Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design)
Hungary, 2006, BetaSP, 6’25’’
A close encounter in a world where rules are set, the paths are narrow, mistakes fatal, and there’s no way back. Sounds familiar?
ELETVONAL / LIFE LINE
Tomek Ducki (Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design)
Jury Statement
Although the world and its inhabitants in LIFELINE consists only of gears of different sizes, the elegant and fluid movements as well as the interaction of the mechanical androids and the musicality of the soundtrack, are intelligent metaphors of going ahead, going together, falling, failing and dying.
LIEBESKRANK / LOVESICK
Špela Čadež (KHM/Špela Čadež)
Germany, Slovenia, 2007, 35mm, 8’30’’
Pain from the heart, never drying tears and turned around heads are difficult to treat, but fortunately not incurable…
Jury Statement
This student shows evident talents in storytelling and control of the motion. She made a touching and sensitive film by cleverly constructing a playful story inspired by commonly used expressions. The jury believes that this filmmaker is a promising artist and wishes that this award will encourage her in her creative process.
Koji Yamamura
ZUDUŠI SNIEGĀ / LOST IN SNOW
Vladimir Leščiov (Jet Media/AniMera AB)
Latvia, Sweden, 2007, 35mm, 7’50’’
Some people go ice fishing in winter. Excitement intensified by freezing temperatures and strong drinks leads to unpredictable consequences.
Statement
What have we lost in an isolated world? The film depicts in a symbolistic manner the nation and the real world by means of a strong drawing style and subdued humour.
Marco de Blois
KURZES LEBEN / SHORT LIFE
Johanna Freise, Danijel Šuljić (Johanna Freise, Danijel Šuljić)
Austria, Germany, 2007, 35mm, 9’02’’
An almost black-and-white inner world of a girl, from fortune-teller to space travel, with a tango on top.
Statement
Johanna Freise and Daniel Šuljić made a convincing cinematic adaptation of a story that first appeared in the form of comics. SHORT LIFE relies on strong characters and a solid sense of "mise en scene". This haunting film also distinguishes itself by some very singular yet powerful erotic scenes.
Brigitta Burger-Utzer
REFRENY / REFRAINS
Wiola Sowa (Studio A)
Poland, 2007, 35mm, 10’58’’
A family of three women who are very close to each other. They are afraid of loneliness and looking for sentiments.
Statement
The pointilistic drawing enfolds a dreamlike atmosphere where Wiola Sowa leaves it open if the three female characters of different generations could be only one person. REFRAINS is an impressionistic poem.
Duscha Kistler
MELNĀ KASTE / BLACK BOX
Jurģis Krāsons (Rija Films)
Latvia, 2006, 35mm, 15’45’’
In search of a new brand a flying hedgehog ball arrives to a territory untouched by globalization. After various misunderstandings, the image of Hoogie (creature of unknown origin) appears on magazine covers all over the world. It is because of the Black Box.
Statement
Depicting the search for a new commercial brand, Jurgis Krasons brings us in a rough landscape with fantastic characters. He tells a story in an anarchistic way. He has a unique visual language and a surprising visual humour.
Fernando Galrito
PRZYPADEK / COINCIDENCE
Joanna Rusinek (Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow)
Poland, 2006, 35mm, 8’05’’
They say that man doesn’t choose his fate, but rather that fate chooses him. However, fate is also said to have poor eyesight… And it can miss you by pure coincidence.
Statement
Considering the fact that there were many good student films, I took the decision to give the award to a strong student graphic film. COINCIDENCE is a film about life as well as a film about the art of meeting in a world full of many miss-encounters.
